Moving to Vernon from Ontario: What to Expect in 2026

Short answer: Moving to the Okanagan from Ontario means a new health plan (with a wait of the rest of the month plus two months before MSP starts), a 90-day window to switch your driver’s licence, and a vehicle inspection before you can register an Ontario car in BC. In return you get a drier climate, milder winters than much of Ontario, and home prices in Vernon that are well below the Toronto area. Starting November 1, 2026, BC stays on permanent Pacific time, so Vernon will be two hours behind Ontario in winter and three in summer.

Every year I help a few families and retirees from Ontario settle in Vernon. Some have visited the Okanagan for years. Others have never been here in January. Here’s what I’d want to know if I were in your shoes.

How do I get BC health coverage when I move from Ontario?

Apply for BC’s Medical Services Plan (MSP) as soon as you arrive. According to the Province of BC, the wait period is the rest of the month you become a BC resident, plus two more months. During that time, you should keep your Ontario coverage in place.

Then register with the Health Connect Registry to find a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Vernon, like much of BC, has a shortage. In June 2025, Interior Health reported 58 family doctors in Vernon and roughly 4,200 people on the registry. How long do I have to change my driver’s licence and plates?

• Licence: ICBC gives you 90 days after moving to switch to a BC licence. Bring your driver’s abstract so you get credit for your driving experience.
• Vehicle: You have 30 days after arriving to register, license and insure your vehicle in BC.
• Inspection: Vehicles coming from Ontario generally need a BC safety inspection before they can be registered. The exemption for private vehicles only covers Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, according to ICBC.

Car insurance in BC runs through ICBC, which works differently from Ontario’s private system. Get a quote from an Autoplan broker before you arrive.

What time zone is Vernon in?

This changed in 2026. The Province of BC adopted permanent daylight time: clocks sprang forward for the last time on March 8, 2026, and won’t fall back on November 1, 2026. BC now stays on Pacific time at UTC-7 year-round.

For Ontario families, that means Vernon will be two hours behind Toronto and Ottawa from November to March, and three hours behind in summer. If you’re calling grandkids after school or working for an Ontario employer, that’s easier than it used to be.

Is the weather in Vernon better than Ontario?

Depends what you like. Using Environment Canada’s 1981 to 2010 normals:

• Winter: Toronto Pearson’s average January temperature is about -5.5°C. Vernon’s Bella Vista station averages about -2.1°C.
• Snow: Toronto Pearson averages about 108 cm of snow a year, Vernon about 91 cm.
• Summer: Average July highs are similar, about 27°C at Pearson and 28°C in Vernon. The difference is humidity. Vernon’s summers are much drier.
• Precipitation: Vernon gets about 428 mm a year, compared to about 786 mm at Pearson.

How do home prices in Vernon compare to Ontario?

The Toronto Regional Real Estate Board reported an average GTA selling price of $993,410 in August 2026. The Association of Interior REALTORS reported a North Okanagan single-family benchmark price of $782,100 in July 2026, with townhouses at $561,000 and condos at $316,200.

These are different measures from different boards, so don’t compare them dollar for dollar. But in general, Ontario buyers coming from the GTA or Ottawa find their budget goes further here, especially for detached homes with a yard. Lake view and waterfront homes are a different story; those are premium properties anywhere in the Okanagan.

Will I qualify for BC’s first-time buyer exemption?

Maybe not right away. BC’s first-time home buyers’ exemption from property transfer tax requires that you’ve lived in BC for 12 consecutive months before the purchase registers, or filed at least two BC income tax returns in the last six years. Most people arriving from Ontario don’t meet that on day one. It’s one reason some first-time buyers rent for a year first.

How do I buy a home in Vernon from Ontario?

Most of my Ontario clients buy one of two ways:

1. Visit, then buy. Fly into Kelowna (YLW is about 40 km from Vernon), spend a few days touring neighbourhoods, and write an offer while you’re here.
2. Buy remotely. We do video walk-throughs, you have an inspector on site, and documents are signed electronically. It takes more trust and more calls, but it works.

Either way, get a mortgage pre-approval that’s valid in BC before you start. My pre-approval page is a good starting point, and a mortgage broker can confirm what lenders will need from you during the move.

Which Vernon neighbourhoods suit Ontario movers?

That depends on your stage of life. Families often look at Coldstream, Middleton Mountain or the BX for school catchments and space. My schools guide explains how catchments work.
