Finding a Family Doctor in Vernon BC (2026)

Short answer: To find a family doctor in Vernon, register with BC’s Health Connect Registry online through HealthLink BC or by calling 8-1-1, then wait to be contacted when a doctor or nurse practitioner has space. In June 2025, Interior Health reported 58 family doctors in Vernon and roughly 4,200 people on the registry, so expect a wait. In the meantime, you can book same-day care at the Vernon Urgent and Primary Care Centre, and Vernon Jubilee Hospital provides 24-hour emergency care.

How do I find a family doctor in Vernon?

BC uses one provincial waitlist, the Health Connect Registry. You sign up once, and the local attachment team contacts you when a family doctor or nurse practitioner in your area has space.

Register online through HealthLink BC’s Health Connect Registry, or call 8-1-1.
Add everyone in your household. HealthLink BC says family members can be added or removed by calling 8-1-1.
Keep your contact information current, so you don’t miss the call.

The registry considers health needs, so people with serious conditions may be connected sooner. Some clinics also accept new patients directly from time to time, so it’s worth asking around. Your pharmacist or neighbours often know first.

How long is the wait for a family doctor in Vernon?

There isn’t a published wait time, but here’s what we know. Interior Health told Vernon council in June 2025 that:

Vernon had 58 family doctors, the same number as two years earlier, as new doctors replaced retirements.
About 4,200 Vernon residents were on the Health Connect Registry.
Roughly 570 people had been connected to a family doctor in the previous six months.

Those figures were reported by Castanet and Vernon Matters. The same reports noted Vernon doesn’t qualify for rural recruitment incentives, which makes hiring harder. On the positive side, the province announced a new primary care network for the North Okanagan and Shuswap in 2024, with plans to add close to 75 full-time health care providers and connect about 22,500 people over four years (BC Gov News).

My honest advice: register as soon as you have a Vernon address, even before you move in.

Where do I go for care while I’m waiting?

You have a few options:

Vernon Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC): 3105 28th Avenue, downtown. It’s open 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. every day, including statutory holidays, according to Interior Health. Call 250-541-1097 to book. It handles non-emergency issues like minor injuries, infections, fevers and skin problems.
Walk-in clinics: Vernon has walk-in and pharmacy-based clinics, but hours and availability change often. Check before you go.
Pharmacists: In BC, pharmacists can help with a range of minor ailments and prescription renewals.
8-1-1: HealthLink BC’s line is available 24/7 to speak with a nurse, with interpretation in more than 130 languages.

For anything serious or life-threatening, call 9-1-1 or go to the emergency department.

What services does Vernon Jubilee Hospital offer?

Vernon Jubilee Hospital (VJH) is at 2101 32nd Street. According to Interior Health, it provides:

24-hour emergency and trauma care
Intensive care
General and specialty surgery, including orthopedics
Maternity care
Cardiac services such as stress testing
Chemotherapy and cancer care
Diagnostic imaging, including CT, MRI, ultrasound and mammography
Rehabilitation

Some highly specialized care is provided at Kelowna General Hospital, about 50 km south. If you or a family member needs regular specialist care, ask your current specialist how a referral would work after the move.

I’m moving from another province. When does my coverage start?

If you’re moving to BC from elsewhere in Canada, apply for the Medical Services Plan (MSP) right away. The Province of BC says the wait period is the rest of the month you become a resident, plus two more months. Keep your old province’s coverage during that time, and don’t put off the MSP application.

Does health care affect where I should buy?

It can. Here’s what I suggest clients think about:

Distance to the hospital: VJH is near downtown. Neighbourhoods like East Hill, Harwood and Mission Hill are close. SilverStar, the Commonage and outlying acreages are farther away.
