Ranch country between two lakes
The Commonage is the rolling, open ranch country south of Vernon, between Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake, on the way to Predator Ridge. It's where you go for acreages, small farms and estate properties with big sky and lake views, just 10 to 15 minutes from town.
The name has deep roots. In 1877 about 28,000 acres here were set aside as a shared "commonage" reserve, used for grazing by the Okanagan (Syilx) people and settler ranchers. The Okanagan Indian Band's rights to it were removed without consultation, and the land was auctioned off from 1893. It's an important part of local history to understand.
Today the Commonage is inside the City of Vernon. Services vary by property: some have municipal water and others rely on wells and septic, so check the details on anything you're considering. Commonage Road also connects you to Predator Ridge and Sparkling Hill.
