Dog Friendly Vernon: Off-Leash Parks and Beaches

Short answer: Vernon is very dog friendly. Off-leash favourites include BX Ranch Dog Park (with a creek for swimming), Mission Hill Park, Marshall Field and DND Dog Park in designated areas, Mutrie Park with a fenced small-dog area, and Morphet Meadows in Coldstream. For swimming, there are designated pet beaches in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park and Coldstream’s Pumphouse Beach, plus many leashed trails like the Grey Canal and Middleton Mountain.

When my clients have a dog, the dog usually gets a vote on the house. And honestly, the dog usually has good taste. Vernon is a great place for dogs: lots of trails, two big lakes, open grassland and a community that’s used to seeing a pup on the patio.

Here’s where to go, based on the Tourism Vernon dog-friendly map (hosted by the City of Vernon), BC Parks and the District of Coldstream. Rules can change, so always read the signs at each park.

Where are the off-leash dog parks in Vernon?

The Tourism Vernon map lists these off-leash areas around Greater Vernon:

BX Ranch Dog Park off BX Road: a favourite, with a creek that Tourism Vernon notes is great for swimming.
Carlson Park on Bench Row Road.
DND Dog Park on 15th Avenue (in the designated area).
Hurlburt Park and Beach on Eastside Road (in the designated area).
Lochhaven Park in Okanagan Landing.
Marshall Field on Okanagan Landing Road (in the designated area).
Mission Hill Park on 15th Avenue (in the designated area).
Morphet Meadows Dog Park on Buchanan Road in Coldstream.
Mutrie Park on Mutrie Road, including a fenced small-dog area.

Keep your dog leashed in parking lots and when entering or leaving an off-leash area, and always pick up after your dog.

Where can dogs swim near Vernon?

This is the big question every summer. A few options:

Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park: BC Parks says pets must be leashed except in designated pet areas, and there are designated pet beaches at Cosens Bay, off the Crest Trail and at Jade Bay. BC Parks also warns that off-leash dogs are especially at risk of rattlesnake bites, so keep an eye out on the grassland trails.
Pumphouse Beach in Coldstream: Coldstream ran a one-year off-leash dog beach pilot on Westkal Road starting in 2025, and local news reported in 2026 that council made it permanent, with a fenced off-leash area.
Hurlburt Park and Beach on Okanagan Lake: the map lists a designated off-leash area on the east side of the beach.
Ellison Provincial Park: the map lists a leashed-dog access point at Sandy Beach.

The map also shows several small public lake access points around Okanagan Landing and the Eastside where leashed dogs are allowed. Main swimming beaches generally don’t allow dogs in summer, so stick to the designated spots.

What are the best trails for dogs in Vernon?

Most Vernon trails welcome dogs on leash. My favourites:

Grey Canal Trail: several flat sections around Bella Vista, Turtle Mountain, East Vernon and Coldstream. Tourism Vernon suggests the Boss Creek and Coldstream Valley Estates sections for sunset walks.
Middleton Mountain trails: a network of loops with big views over Kalamalka Lake and the valley.
BX Creek and Falls Trail: shaded and cooler on hot days, though the stairs to the falls are steep.
Kal Crystal Waters Trail: a longer route starting near Okanagan College.
Becker Park: the City notes it’s dog friendly, with waste bags at the entrance.

Policies change, so it’s always worth calling ahead, but Tourism Vernon has highlighted these:

BNA Vernon downtown, which Tourism Vernon lists as having a dog-friendly patio.
Friesen’s Countrytyme Gardens in Coldstream, with a garden patio Tourism Vernon describes as dog friendly.
Okanagan Spirits, which Tourism Vernon says welcomes friendly, leashed dogs at its Vernon tasting room.
Davison Orchards, where Tourism Vernon says leashed dogs are allowed at the Farmhouse Cafe and village grounds.
The Vernon Farmers’ Market says calm, well-behaved dogs on a short leash are welcome.

What should dog owners know about living in Vernon?

A few practical things for new residents:

Dog licensing: most local governments in the area require dogs to be licensed. Check with the City of Vernon, the District of Coldstream or the RDNO depending on where you live.
Strata rules: if you’re buying a condo or townhome, read the strata bylaws for pet limits, size limits and rules for common areas before you write an offer. I always ask for these early.
Yards and fencing: a fenced yard is often at the top of a dog owner’s list, and it’s worth checking fence condition and any gates during showings.
Wildlife: deer, coyotes and the occasional bear are part of life on the edge of town. Keep small dogs close at dusk.

Which neighbourhoods are best for dog owners?

It depends on the kind of walks you like. Middleton Mountain has trails right out the door. The BX is close to BX Ranch Dog Park and the creek trails.
