Jobs in Vernon BC: Employers and the Economy

Short answer: Vernon’s economy rests on health care, education, government, retail, tourism, construction, manufacturing and forestry. The biggest employers include Interior Health, School District 22, the City of Vernon and Okanagan College, and Vernon is home to the head offices of Kal Tire and Tolko Industries. Across the Thompson-Okanagan, health care is the largest sector and nurses are among the most in-demand workers. Many residents also commute to Kelowna, about 50 km away, or work remotely.

When someone is thinking of moving to Vernon for work, or moving here and then finding work, I try to give them a clear picture of what the local economy looks like. Here’s an overview using the latest official data I could find, as of September 2026.

What are the biggest employers in Vernon?

The City of Vernon and the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce both list major local employers. Between them, they include:

Public sector: Interior Health (including Vernon Jubilee Hospital), School District 22, the City of Vernon, the District of Coldstream, the Regional District of North Okanagan and Okanagan College
Head offices: Kal Tire and Tolko Industries, plus corporate offices for BC Hydro, Nature’s Fare and Westwood Electric
Manufacturing and food: Kingfisher Boats, Okanagan Spring Brewery, Rogers Foods, Hytec, Alpine Spa Covers, Acutruss and Tekmar
Tourism and recreation: SilverStar Mountain Resort, Predator Ridge Resort and Sparkling Hill Resort
Retail: The major national chains, plus a strong base of local shops downtown

The Chamber also reports more than 7,800 businesses operating in the area, and the City describes Vernon as one of the most entrepreneurial regions in BC. Small business and self-employment are a big part of the picture here.

Which industries are growing in the Okanagan?

Vernon doesn’t have its own labour force survey, so the best official data is for the wider Thompson-Okanagan region. According to WorkBC’s Thompson-Okanagan profile, with figures as of August 2026:

About 315,700 people were employed in the region, and the unemployment rate was 7.2%.
The largest sectors were health care and social assistance (15.9% of jobs), retail trade (11.7%) and construction (10.3%).
WorkBC forecasts about 110,480 job openings in the region from 2025 to 2035.

The occupations with the most expected openings included retail and wholesale trade managers, registered nurses, retail salespeople, nurse aides and patient service associates, and administrative officers.

Are health care jobs in demand in Vernon?

Very much so. Health care is the region’s biggest employer, and Vernon has been actively recruiting. Interior Health told Vernon council in June 2025 that the city had 58 family doctors and was working to recruit more, including doctors from the UK and other provinces. A new primary care network for the North Okanagan and Shuswap, announced in 2024, plans to add close to 75 full-time providers over four years (BC Gov News). If you’re a nurse, doctor, allied health professional or care aide, Vernon is worth a serious look.

What are wages like in Vernon?

BC’s general minimum wage rose to $18.25 an hour on June 1, 2026 (Province of BC). The 2025 BC living wage report set Vernon’s living wage at $24.10 an hour, compared to $25.95 in Kelowna and $27.85 in Metro Vancouver.

Can I live in Vernon and work in Kelowna?

Yes, lots of people do. Downtown Vernon to downtown Kelowna is about 50 km on Highway 97, usually 45 minutes to an hour. Kelowna has a bigger job market, with UBC Okanagan, Kelowna General Hospital, the main Okanagan College campus and a larger tech sector. Kelowna International Airport is only about 40 km from Vernon, which helps if your job involves travel.

What about remote work?

It’s a big part of Vernon’s economy now. The Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce reports that 13.6% of local workers work remotely.
