Vernon Drive Times: Kelowna, the Airport, SilverStar and the Lakes

Short answer: Driving from downtown Vernon to downtown Kelowna usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Kelowna International Airport (YLW) is roughly 30 to 40 minutes south, and SilverStar Mountain Resort is about 25 to 40 minutes uphill. Kal Beach and Kin Beach are only 5 to 15 minutes away. Times vary a lot with traffic, construction, time of day and especially winter conditions, so treat these as ranges, not promises.

When buyers are deciding where to live, drive time is often the tiebreaker. A home that’s “near Vernon” can mean five minutes from the lake or twenty-five minutes from the grocery store. Below are the ranges I give my clients, based on typical daytime driving in good weather, and where they tend to stretch.

How long is the drive from Vernon to Kelowna?

Plan on roughly 45 to 60 minutes from downtown Vernon to downtown Kelowna on Highway 97, which runs along Kalamalka and Wood lakes through Lake Country.

What changes it:

• Where you start. Coldstream and the south end of Vernon save a few minutes. The North End and BX add some.
• Where you’re going in Kelowna. The north end (UBC Okanagan, the airport, Glenmore) is noticeably closer than downtown Kelowna or the Mission.
• Kelowna traffic. Most of the slowdown on this trip happens once you reach Kelowna, particularly at rush hour and on summer weekends.

If you’re commuting daily, drive the route at your actual commute time before you buy. Many people who live in Vernon and work in Kelowna are happy with it; others find it’s a lot more than they expected.

Transit option: BC Transit’s Route 90 connects Vernon and UBC Okanagan. Check the current schedule for frequency and weekend service.

How far is Vernon from Kelowna International Airport?

Tourism Vernon describes YLW as about 30 minutes south of Vernon. From my experience, I’d plan 30 to 40 minutes from downtown Vernon, and more at peak times or in snow.

From other areas:

• Coldstream: similar to downtown, sometimes a little quicker.
• Okanagan Landing and The Rise: add a few minutes to get down to Highway 97.
• Predator Ridge: the resort says about 25 minutes, since it sits south of Vernon.
• SilverStar: SilverStar’s partners describe it as about an hour from YLW.

For early flights, give yourself a buffer in winter. There are also airport shuttle services between YLW, Vernon and SilverStar.

Vernon also has its own small Regional Airport for private and small aircraft, about 10 minutes from downtown, per Tourism Vernon. It doesn’t have scheduled airline service.

How long does it take to get to SilverStar from Vernon?

SilverStar Mountain Resort is about 22 kilometres northeast of Vernon, up Silver Star Road. In good conditions, plan roughly 25 to 40 minutes from downtown, depending on where you start. The resort’s base sits at about 1,155 metres, several hundred metres above the valley floor, so the road can be snowy when it’s bare in town.

How close are the lakes?

This is one of Vernon’s biggest perks. Rough drive times from downtown:

• Kal Beach (Kalamalka Lake, Coldstream): about 5 to 10 minutes.
• Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park: about 10 to 15 minutes. BC Parks lists it as 8 km south of the city centre. Parking fills up on summer weekends.
• Kekuli Bay Provincial Park (boat launch and campground): about 10 to 15 minutes, 11 km south of Vernon off Highway 97.
• Kin Beach and Paddlewheel Park (Okanagan Lake): about 10 to 15 minutes.
• Ellison Provincial Park: about 20 to 25 minutes, past Okanagan Landing.

If lake access is the priority, Okanagan Landing (Okanagan Lake) and Coldstream (Kalamalka Lake) put you minutes from the water. I live at The Strand in Okanagan Landing, and being able to get to the lake quickly after work is a big reason why.

How far are Predator Ridge and the other outlying areas?

Rough ranges from downtown Vernon:

• Predator Ridge: about 20 to 25 minutes.
• The Rise and Bella Vista: about 10 to 15 minutes.
• Middleton Mountain and central Coldstream: about 10 minutes.
• Lavington: about 15 to 20 minutes east on Highway 6.
• Lumby: about 25 to 30 minutes east on Highway 6.

How far is Vernon from Vancouver and Calgary?

Tourism Vernon lists these approximate driving distances:

• Vancouver: 441 km, about 4.5 hours
• Calgary: 556 km, about 6 hours
• Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1): about 45 minutes north

What should I know about winter driving?

Winter changes every number on this page. A few basics:

1. Winter tires are required on many BC highways. The Province of BC says most designated routes require winter tires from October 1 to April 30, with some routes ending March 31. Check the map for your routes.
2. Check DriveBC before any highway trip, especially over passes or up to SilverStar.
3. Look at the driveway, not just the drive. A steep driveway or hillside street can matter more than the highway. Ask the seller how the street is plowed.
4. Elevation matters. Homes up on Bella Vista, Middleton Mountain, The Rise or SilverStar can see more snow than homes in the valley.

How should drive times affect where I buy?

Here’s the framework I use:

• If you commute to Kelowna daily, the south end of Vernon, Coldstream or Predator Ridge can shave off some time. Test-drive your commute before you commit.
