The BX: country living on the way to SilverStar
The BX is the rural valley northeast of Vernon, stretching up toward SilverStar Mountain Resort. The name comes from Barnard's Express, the gold-rush stage line Francis Barnard started in 1861; his holding here became the BX Ranch. In 1907 a Belgian-backed company, the Land and Agricultural Company of Canada, bought the land and split it into smaller farms for settlers, which is why you'll see road names like L&A Road, Dedecker Road and Herry Road.
Today the BX is mostly in the Regional District of North Okanagan, with acreages, hobby farms, horse properties and family homes on big lots, much of it in the Agricultural Land Reserve. Many homes are on septic, so the details matter when you buy.
The outdoors is the big draw. The BX Creek Trail and BX Falls are local favourites, with trailheads off Tillicum Road, Star Road and Deleenheer Road, and SilverStar is about 25 minutes up the hill.
North BX and South BX
- North BX: the larger, more rural part, with acreages and higher-end country homes. Recent listings have run from lots in the low $100,000s to over $3 million.
- South BX: closer to town, with more family homes built in the 1970s to 1990s.
