Coldstream is its own municipality, right beside Vernon at the north end of Kalamalka Lake, the "lake of many colours." It was incorporated in 1906 and had about 11,200 residents in the 2021 census. It feels semi-rural, with ranch land, orchards and big lots, yet downtown Vernon is only about 10 minutes away.
The lake is the heart of it. Kal Beach is the local favourite for summer swims, Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park has trails, viewpoints and quieter beaches, and the Okanagan Rail Trail runs along the lakeshore for walking and cycling. Coldstream Ranch, founded in 1863, still runs cattle in the valley.
